Cider Shack celebrated their 5th year anniversary this summer, which is quite an accomplishment considering they got a not-so auspicious start in the beginning of Covid. Just a ten-minute walk east of Shibuya Station on the main street (Meiji-dori), Cider Shack is very much worth the jaunt if only to get away from the maddening crowds and confusion of the downtown.
Their inspiration and raison d’être came from one of the owners initial visit turned work-stay at the revered Ross on Wye Cider & Perry Company in the United Kingdom, which is Cider Shack’s house cider as they import it directly from the source. They also feature select domestic ciders from Nagano Prefecture, usually from local favourites Les Vins Vivants and Son of the Smith Hard Cider. Domestic beer is also on the menu, both can be ordered either on draft or by the can and bottle.
Cider Shack’s charm comes from a near perfect balance of being a typically Japanese-style tiny bar with a great selection of drinks and street food to order and being run by friendly, knowledgable staff who not only know their wares, but are also enthusiastic about sharing that knowledge with patrons, whether first-time customers or die-hard regulars.
It’s a shame I don’t live closer to frequent Cider Shack more often, but I am a fan and can’t recommend them enough.
